3 types of injuries and illnesses that qualify for workers’ comp

On Behalf of | Aug 14, 2024 | Workers' Compensation |

When a Tennessee worker gets hurt or sick because of their job, they might be able to file a workers’ compensation claim. Knowing what types of injuries and illnesses qualify can help workers get the benefits they need.

1. Common injuries covered by workers’ compensation

Workers’ compensation covers many types of injuries that happen on the job. These include injuries from accidents like falls, slips, or getting hurt by machinery. Repetitive motion injuries, like carpal tunnel syndrome, also qualify. These injuries often develop over time from doing the same movement repeatedly, such as typing or lifting.

Workers who hurt their backs from lifting heavy objects or get broken bones from falling objects may also qualify. The main point is that the injury must happen while doing your job, whether it’s from one event or builds up over time.

2. Occupational illnesses and diseases

Workers’ compensation also covers illnesses and diseases caused by job-related activities. For example, if a worker breathes in harmful substances, like asbestos, they might develop lung problems. Loud noises at work can lead to hearing loss, and working with chemicals might cause skin issues or long-term health problems. Workers in certain jobs, like construction or manufacturing, are more likely to develop these kinds of illnesses. To qualify, the illness must be directly linked to the job.

3. Mental health conditions

Sometimes, mental health conditions may also be covered by workers’ compensation. If a worker experiences a traumatic event at work, like a serious accident, they might develop stress or anxiety. Jobs that are very stressful, like emergency response roles, can also lead to mental health issues. These types of claims often need more proof to show that the job caused the condition.

Know your rights as a worker

Navigating the workers’ compensation process can be challenging, especially when you’re dealing with an injury or illness. By understanding the types of conditions that qualify, you can better protect your health and your livelihood. Knowing what workers’ compensation covers ensures that you’re taking the right steps to get the support you deserve.
