How can a traumatic brain injury impact your daily life?

After an accident or fall, a person could gradually start to feel different and react in strange ways to the people around them.

Struggling with brain trauma in the weeks or months after this injury can greatly impact their life and mental health. Knowing the signs of this problem may help them decide what steps to take next.

Confusing conversations

According to the Mayo Clinic, many people with brain injuries may appear upset or easily lose track of a conversation they have with someone else. This annoyance can also happen when they cannot communicate properly in writing. They may also struggle to understand subtle cues like changes in tone or nonverbal body language.

They could reply with confusing or untrue statements that do not answer the questions the other person asked. While it is normal to feel tired after a major accident, the inability to follow basic conversations is a sign that something serious is wrong.

Extreme behavior

A sudden increase in angry behavior and risk-taking actions can come from a brain injury. Someone who suffers from this can start to show more aggravation and annoyance at other people. They may not even be able to tell that they are acting strangely without someone else alerting them to this change.

Shouting and yelling could increase, along with moments of outbursts that are not socially acceptable, and can leave them feeling more alone.

Sleep trouble

Struggling to fall asleep and get a full night’s sleep can happen after brain trauma. This person may also lose consciousness at random times throughout the day. Knowing how serious brain injuries impact a person’s life and health can help them after an accident.
