In Tennessee, when you experience a work-related injury, your employer must provide you with a panel of at least three independent, reputable physicians from your local community. This panel allows you to choose your authorized treating physician for your injury.
Employer’s Obligation
Upon receiving notice of your injury, your employer has three business days to present you with this panel, using the “Employee’s Choice of Physician” form (C-42). Each physician listed must be willing and able to provide timely treatment.
Your Choice
You select a doctor from this panel to oversee your treatment. Once you’ve made your choice and signed the form, your employer keeps the original, and you receive a copy.
Specialist Referrals
If your treating physician determines you need a specialist, they can refer you. In such cases, your employer can either provide a new panel of specialists or accept the referral as your new authorized treating physician.
Emergency Situations
In emergencies, you should seek immediate care. After stabilization, your employer will provide the physician panel for ongoing treatment.
Seeking Treatment Outside the Panel
Choosing a doctor outside this panel without following proper procedures may result in you bearing the medical costs. You must adhere to these guidelines to ensure your treatment is covered under workers’ compensation.
Following these steps can ensure that you receive appropriate medical care while complying with Tennessee’s workers’ compensation laws.
