Workers' compensation may also provide death benefits

No matter what one does for a living, there may always exist the possibility that a tragic accident can occur. While most Tennessee workers are aware of the benefits provided by the workers' compensation insurance program, not everyone may know that the program may also supply death benefits to survivors under certain circumstances. Tragically, a fatal accident can occur without warning, leaving financial hardships in the aftermath.

Recently, officials were called to a Nashville quarry for reports of a worker suffering a serious accident. It was determined that a 22-year-old man was working in the quarry while a front-end loader was being used to dump sand into the ditch. For reasons that are unclear, the machinery slid down and into the opening where the man was working.

The construction vehicle pinned the worker against a concrete culvert, which caused him to suffer fatal injuries. Company officials and the Mine Safety and Health Administration are conducting an investigation into the accident to determine how the fatal incident may have occurred. The man was employed as a subcontractor for Vulcan Materials Company.

The investigation has just begun and will take some time to complete. It is unknown whether the company will be found in violation of any safety regulations in this fatal accident. The workers' compensation insurance program ensures that Tennessee workers who are injured on the job receive monetary benefits to help make ends meet. However, when an accident results in the death of an employee, designated survivors may qualify for death benefits. Those who are unsure of what benefits they may be eligible to receive may be best served by contacting an attorney who handles these types of claims on a routine basis to ensure that maximum benefits will be awarded.
