Communication problems and other effects of brain injuries

Traumatic brain injuries are often very serious. When you are involved in a car accident, this is one of the injuries that you might suffer. It can occur whether you bang your head on something or from the violent way your head is flung during the crash.

When you have a serious or traumatic brain injury, every aspect of your life can be affected. Some minor injuries only have limited repercussions, but this isn’t the case when the damage is severe.

Trouble communicating

One of the most frustrating aspects of a traumatic brain injury for some victims is having trouble communicating. If the brain injury covers a large area of the brain, this can make communication very difficult.

Not only can this impact a person’s ability to speak, it can also impact the person’s ability to focus and comprehend spoken words. Together, this makes it hard for the individual to understand what is being said and to reply.

Other significant impacts

The frustrations that come with a traumatic brain injury aren’t limited to communication. You may also suffer from trouble with keeping your emotions in check and controlling your behavior. This is further compounded by the difficulty communicating because you might not be able to accurately express your needs or feelings.

Trouble with motor skills can also make life more difficult after the injury. While you might be tempted to grab a pencil and paper and write what you need to communicate or type it out on a keyboard, this may not be possible because of fine and gross motor skill changes.

Assistive techniques might help

There is a chance that you may be able to learn some methods to make communication and other skills a bit easier. Learning these often means that you need to go through various therapies, including physical, occupational and speech therapy. All of these might help you learn how to live your life in a manner as close to normal as possible.

As you start making appointments to help you deal with your brain injury, you might find that these appointments are time-consuming and costly. Since you aren’t able to work and might have to rely on others for transportation, this can make life even more difficult. It is certainly in your best interest to reduce the financial impact by seeking compensation from the driver who struck you.
